Due to Covid-19 and the difficulty some people were having accessing practical first aid training. The HSE, DfES, Ofsted and EYFS had all given extensions to HSE and Ofsted/EYFS paediatric qualifications until the end of September 2020.
Our ‘covid-safe’, socially distanced courses are booking up extremely fast because of this, so act fast and book now!
Why learn First Aid?
Not only is First Aid an invaluable skill and helps demonstrate your duty of care; it is also a legal requirement to ensure that all businesses – including sole traders, have appropriate first aid provision in place.
The HSE supports the use of online refresher training to keep skills up to date. For first aiders that has proved a convenient, comprehensive, option during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.
During Lockdown, we were proud to provide all the online first aid training for McDonalds, throughout UK and Ireland. They have been extremely pleased with this way of refreshing their learning and continue to work with us.
The HSE still require regulated FAW and EFAW initial qualifications and re-qualifications are face to face, so that student competency of the practical elements can be properly assessed. However, they are happy to support blended learning of HSE qualifications, with pre-learning online for theoretical elements, consequently reducing the amount of time in the classroom and offering a more concise and convenient way of learning.

First aid cover and qualifications during the Covid-19 outbreak
The following information regarding qualification extensions and First Aid during Covid-19 is from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) website.
If first aid cover for your business is lacking because of coronavirus or you can’t get the first aid training you need, there are some things you can do so that you still comply with the law.
You should review your first aid needs assessment and decide if you can still provide the cover needed for the workers that are present and the activities that they are doing.
Keep enough first aid cover
If fewer people are coming into your workplace it may still be safe to operate with minimal first aid cover. You could also stop higher-risk activities.
Share first aid cover with another business
You could share the first aiders of another business, but ensure that they have the knowledge, experience and availability to cover the first aid needs of your business.
Shared first aiders must:
- be aware of the type of injuries or illnesses that you identified in your first aid needs assessment and have the training and skills to address them
- know enough about your work environment and its first aid facilities
- be able to get to the workplace quickly (within 3 minutes of a cardiac arrest to give someone the best chance of survival)
Whoever provides temporary cover must make sure that this does not adversely affect their own first aid cover.
All first aid certificate extensions expire at the end of September 2020
Annual refresher training
If first aiders are unable to access annual refresher training face to face during the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, HSE supports the use of online refresher training to keep their skills up to date.
Interrupted first aid training
If because of coronavirus you cannot complete training for your first aid qualification within the usual timeframe, training can restart at a later date as long as:
- there is a full recap of the training before the interruption before moving onto undelivered modules
- the awarding body is content that you can show:
- a full understanding of all aspects of the course content
- the knowledge required and competencies at the end of the training
