5 Top First Aid Tips

  1. If somebody is choking, before doing the Heimlich manoeuvre you should first encourage them to cough, then give them back blows to try and dislodge the obstruction.
  2. At the scene of a major accident, your priority should not be casualties crying or screaming out in pain; if they can make noise they can breathe, your priority is anyone who is silent.
  3. If there is an object in a wound, you should not remove it. It may be stemming bleeding.
  4. If someone is fitting, do not put anything in their mouth; choking on something is a lot worse than biting your tongue.
  5. If someone has had an accident, don’t give them anything to eat or drink as they may need to have a general anaesthetic.
