Emma Hammett is delighted to have been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) in the King’s birthday honours for her outstanding service to first aid training, accident prevention and work trying to reduce knife crime.
Emma founded First Aid for Life in 2007, with a desire to empower as many people as possible with the skills and confidence to save lives. This was motivated by the numerous occasions during her nursing career that revealed the immense importance of prompt and appropriate first aid to the speed and extent of someone’s recovery. Furthermore, a family tragedy resulted in her sister being severely brain damaged following a car accident as bystanders were unaware of the importance of opening her obstructed airway. Emma and her team teach first aid in a clear, straight forward and engaging way to empower people with understanding and confidence to help in a medical emergency.

First Aid for Life is a multi-award-winning, fully regulated first aid training provider. They have 53 trainers across the UK, who are medical, health, emergency services professionals and military medics. Training is tailored to the needs of those attending. First Aid for Life is a leading provider of paediatric first aid, first aid for staff and pupils in schools, work first aid, family first aid, first aid for health professionals, carers and sports first aid. They run courses for young people, youth workers, young offenders and pupil referral units, focussing on the dangers of carrying weapons and equipping them with vital skills to help themselves or others should they be injured. In addition, Emma established www.FirstAidforPets.net written and taught with veterinary professionals, for dog and cat owners and businesses to learn vital first aid for pets.
Emma also provides free infographics, resources, courses and articles to enable as many people as possible to gain these skills. The Firstaidforlife YouTube channel has more than 9 million views and over 28,000 subscribers.
FirstAidforLife.org.uk and onlinefirstaid.com were established with a simple wish to enable as many people as possible to learn critical first aid and accident prevention skills to be able to help themselves and others in a medical emergency.
